Here are the steps for changing the water filter on a Samsung RF28HMEDBSR refrigerator. The filter is usually inside the refrigerator compartment, between the crisper drawers.
Before we start, we have two things to do
1. Purchase the Correct Replacement Filter: The most common filter for the RF28HMEDBSR is the Samsung HAF-CIN/EXP (the Part number is often listed as DA29-00020B). We can buy it by clicking Samsung HAF-CIN/EXP DA29-00020B water filter. Check the old filter itself to confirm the exact part number needed. Buying the wrong filter won’t work.
2. (Optional but Recommended) Shut Off Water Supply: While many Samsung internal filters have auto-shutoff valves, turning off the cold water supply line valve leading to the refrigerator is safest. This valve is usually located under the sink or behind the fridge. This prevents potential leaks if something goes wrong.
Steps to Change the Filter:
1. Locate the Filter Housing: Open the refrigerator doors. Look between the center’s two bottom crisper drawers (fruit/vegetable bins).
2. Remove the Old Filter: If there’s a cover, gently push or slide it open or remove it according to the label/design. Grasp the end of the old filter cartridge. Turn the filter counter-clockwise (to the left) about 1/4 of a turn. You should feel it unlock. There will be unlock symbols nearby to guide you. Pull the filter straight down and out of the housing.
3. Prepare the New Filter: Take off the protective cap from the end of the new filter (the part that inserts into the fridge). Don’t forget this step!

4. Install the New Filter: Insert the new filter straight into the housing until it stops. Turn the filter clockwise (to the right) about 1/4 of a turn until it locks firmly into place. You should feel it click or seat securely. Ensure the lock symbol on the filter aligns with the indicator mark on the housing.
5.(If you turned water off) Turn Water Supply Back On: Slowly turn the water supply valve back on.
6. Flush the Filter: This is very important! New filters contain loose carbon particles (fines) and trapped air. Dispense water continuously for at least 5 minutes or until at least 3-4 gallons (about 12-15 liters) of water have flowed through.
The water may sputter initially due to air and might look cloudy or discolored due to carbon fines. This is normal. Keep flushing until the water runs clear and smooth. Discard this flushed water.

7. Reset the Filter Indicator Light: Your display panel’s “Change Filter” light won’t reset automatically. On most models, like the RF28HMEDBSR, you need to press and hold a specific button combination for 3 seconds.
Sometimes, the button is “Filter Reset” or “Ice Off.” Sometimes, we should simultaneously press the “Ice Type” and “Child Lock” buttons. The indicator light should turn off (or change color, e.g., from red back to blue/green).
Important Notes:
- Check for Leaks: Recheck the filter area over the next few hours after installing the water and turning it back on for any drips.
- Use Genuine Filters: While third-party filters might be cheaper, they may not fit correctly or filter effectively, or they could potentially cause leaks or damage. Using genuine Samsung filters is generally recommended.
